NARRATIVE THEORY - TODOROV
Tzvetan Todorov is the second theorist that I had to study and research, he was a Bulgarian literary theorist who suggested that most narratives that exist start with a state of equilibrium in which life is 'normal' and the protagonists are happy. This state of normality is then disrupted or broken by an outside force, which has to be fought against in order to return to a state of equilibrium. This can be applied to a wide range of films, most films of today may follow this theory. A recent example would be Avengers, where the Superheroes had to all join together and fend off an alien invasion which was powerful enough to destroy the planet.
Todorovs theory could also be applied to my production, as my protagonist Mason, was living a normal life, going to school, doing his work, and progressing in his life. However, one day, he begins to realise that he is being followed, and after finding out who he really is and why he is being followed, he understands that he has to protect himself from those who mean him harm, as to return to his normal life. Audiences like this representation as they want to see a protagonist or hero struggle against the odds, and in this struggle, see them grow and overcome it. This state of equilibrium can be applied with Propp's use of character types, as the characters involved may feature heavily to either destroy, or protect the state of equilibrium.
