NARRATIVE THEORY - PROPP

A narrative is the way in which a story is told in both fictional and non-fictional text, within a narrative, there are many theorists who have come up their own theories based on the narratives that exist. They believe that most, if not all narratives, adhere to their theories. Vladimir Propp is the first theorist that I will be referencing, he was a Russian critic and literacy theorist, he proposed that it was possible to categorise the characters and their actions into clearly defined roles and functions. These roles can differ and change depending on the genre of the given text.

Propp's character roles included:

  • The Hero (Who seeks something)

  • The Villain (Who opposes the hero)

  • The donor (Helps the hero by providing an object or item)

  • The dispatcher (Who sends the hero on his way)

  • The false Hero (Falsely assumes the role of the hero)

  • The helper (Supports the hero)

  • Damsel in Distress (Serves as the reward or romantic interest for the protagonist, but can also be substituted for another suitable treasure)

I believe that Propp's theory does link to my own production, several of his character types are noticeably made apparent in my production. With 'The Hero' and 'The Villain' being the main suspects involved. I believe that these two character types exist for a story to properly develop and unfold, especially in an action genre film, which people watch mainly to see the Hero outsmart the Villain through the use of clever tactics or strength, these Heroes are generally represented as strong and handsome to appeal to viewers and aspire-rs.
