QUESTIONNAIRE ANALYSIS

I had previously sent out a questionnaire to my peers that would help me to plan out and research what I should do with my Action film that I will be creating along with my group. The questions that I have asked will give me an indication as to what direction the film will be taking.

Q1) What is the best action film you've watched?

Responses:

- The Dark Knight

- Avengers (x2)

- Kill BIll vol.1

- The Raid 2

- Avengers 2

- The Raid

- The Departed

As you can see, there is a clear trend in the popularity of superhero movies - which seems to be the mainstream trend nowadays regarding action films. As my film will contain social-realistic elements, I do not think that the superhero genre will be suitable for my film, so I will more likely try to make my film realistic.

From this question, I can take away that people would like to see a mix of the three sub-genres from an action film, backing up my opinion that an action film would have a deeper story if it where to contain all three elements within the film as there are more conventions of genre to work with and the story can be adapted to whatever I like.

This questions confirms the conventions of action films that are generally seen, people want to see cars - which are often seen in chases, melee weapons, so most likely knives, and weapons such as guns, iconic to the genre as it makes scenes intense and can connote a number of things regarding what the genre is about, such as themes of violence. It is clear that action films contain numerous action packed scenes that require a number of different things, I have to make sure that when handling things such as prop-guns - I have permission to use them as I may get in trouble. I also have to make sure that the person who may give us permission to use their car has some sort of license or insurance.

I made this question to determine if the plot route I was taking with my film was in the right direction, the majority of the answers tend to be favorable, with 4 out of the possible 9 answers rating it an average 3/5. This means that if I were to commit to this story-line, I would have to improve the plot even further to make it more convincing for the audience to watch the film.

I created this question as I wanted to know what people really wanted to see in an action film trailer; fast paced action and exciting scenes with car chases, combat, explosions and an insight to the plot regarding the protagonist and main villain was what I had in mind, and all of these answers turned up. When creating these sort of scenes, I have to make sure that the CGI does not take away from the scene, as over complicating the CGI of explosive effects may make the scene unrealistic. Fast paced editing and short cuts also have to be done wall to emphasise the pace of the film and make it seem quick.

This question helped me to determine what the most important aspects of a film trailer were; giving me an idea as to what elements I should prioritise. From the answers I have received, I should focus on the plot and the characters I have created, followed by the acting, and finally the music and editing.

This question gave me an idea as to what music I should include in an action-trailer; the majority answered Hip-Hop, however the answers may be skewed toward it as I have only gave the questionnaire to my peers who all seem the like Hip-Hop the most compared to other genres. And concluding my case study of Inception, which had a successful movie trailer without the inclusion of Hip-Hop music, I believe that a trailer should use a different type of music to resonate a very tense vibe and not a mainstream hip-hop theme.

I only asked this question to give me a realistic clue as to what my character would do in this situation. This question was only to help me develop a plot-point that could exist in my trailer.

This question helped me to decide what I should create other than the film trailer for my project as I was undecided between a film magazine poster and a film website. It seems that more people find about movies from the Internet and Social media rather than a poster, so I have decided to create a film website to exist along with my film trailer for the project.

This final question was also to help me in the creation of the protagonist that was to be featured in the film, it is clear that people want to see someone who starts off weak and eventually becomes strong through his own experiences as this is a theme that is usually seen in actions films today, is rewarding to see, and people generally like to see it happen.

OVERALL SUMMARY

Action films should be fast paced, contain some sort of combat with a chase scene or a pursuit, should prioritise the plot and the characters over the music and effects, and should contain a central protagonist who may be weak, but eventually becomes strong enough to overcome his foes.
